The site's defining feature is a granite outcropping on the east shore of Westport Island, facing the Sheepscot River and the Atlantic beyond. The cottage sits back on the heel of the rock so that the front porch opens directly onto the ledge — the same formation that had been the focus of the family's visits for nearly four decades. Shingle-style forms drawn from the 19th-century work of Mt. Desert Island architect Fred Savage, clad in Eastern White Cedar that will weather to silver gray. The main living space — kitchen, dining, and great room — wraps a porch with 270-degree water views.
